This traditional hymn was written by John Newton: once the captain of his own slave ship, in the business of capturing, selling and transporting black slaves from Africa to the West Indies and America. After his conversion to Christianity, he gave up that business and eventually was ordained by the Anglican church to preach the gospel in Olney, England. He began writing his own hymns and eventually published the famous Olney Hymns hymnal. He continued to fight for the abolishment of slavery which was accomplished the year of his death by the British Parliament.
